aaaaaaaaaand WE'RE BACK!

More or less, anyway. Stuff has been happening! LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT IT.

First off, my mom is doing great :3 She's got a new job in the post-partum (newborn babbies!) department of a much nicer hospital and is able to get around fairly normally. Yay!

Secondly, as kk already knows, I'M FINALLY FINISHING HER COMMISSION. It's been about a year but she's been very understanding of my busytimes so I will be making it extra special! Should have that done before the week is out. It's about 30 or 40% finished :>

Thirdly, I am now officially a published artist! Back in December I was approached by Fantasy Flight Games to do a couple card illustrations for their Soul Calibur IV UFS collectible card game. I've done four illustrations for them so far, and two of the cards have already been printed and released in the current set that's out in stores :D I don't know if I have permission to post the drawings or scans of the cards, so I'll look into that. I imagine it's fine once the material has been released to the public, but I don't wanna get myself in trouble.

Fourthly, things are moving forward with my brother's game company. He's been hard at work on his written materials, and I've finally had the time and energy to start doing some concept sketches (which I'm not allowed to share till we assemble something copyrightable). Our current goals are to have a splash page with the general premise of the main game he's working on up by GenCon (mid August), and hopefully have something releasable compiled in a year from now. More on that later, I guess!

So it took me about a year, but I think I've finally adjusted to being out of school and in the working world and I'm ready to move forward towards my goals. I'll be drawing more and looking into masters of fine arts programs and POSSIBLY opening up for more commissions if there's interest and time permits. I'm done letting stuff get in the way of what I wanna do >:[

news post: not dead (yet)

I've been around a little lately, responding to a few comments and notes here and there, but as many of you have noticed I've been mostly MIA. I haven't been posting any new drawings because I don't really have any aside from some crappy lunch break doodles. As the holidays grew closer, things got busier and busier (which was probably the norm for everyone else too) but they didn't stop getting busy afterwords.

My mom got attacked by a patient at work one night early January (she works night shift in the cath lab at a heart hospital on the weekends). He was confused and agitated, possibly due to a negative reaction to some of the medication or alcohol withdrawal, and grabbed the other nurse she was working with hard by the wrist.

Mom was on the other side of the room, farthest from the door, and tried to get him to calm down and let her go. He didn't like this apparently, and threw one of the little visitor chairs at her (small, light things--the kind you see in elementary school classrooms, nothing crazy dangerous). Mom caught the first one, then started climbing over the bed to get to the exit, but he threw a second one which clipped her in the shoulder. She landed upright, but awkwardly, and something in her right knee popped.

An MRI scan later, it turns out she completely tore her ACL and needed reconstructive surgery, which she had a couple weeks ago. So she's been a little incapacitated and I've been pulling double-duty around the house with cleaning and meal cooking and grocery shopping for the family. I do have SOME free time, but when I have it I'm usually way too drained to want to do anything that requires effort. So I probably won't be drawing much for a little while yet, and definitely won't be reopening commissions any time soon.

KK's unfinished commish will be the first thing I tackle, then I'll probably do my own thing (personal drawings, update my website, stuff for my brother's game) till I've satisfied the backlog of draw I've been wanting to do.

So there's that. Sorry about the wall of text, and sorry if I haven't responded to your comment or note. I probably read it, but didn't have time to respond, and then forgot it was there .__. I'll try to respond to unanswered notes soon though.

no commission slots yet...

Wed Oct 1, 2008, 9:46 AM
I know I was planning on having a fresh batch of commissions open by now, and I know there are already a few of you who are lined up outside the metaphorical door waiting for me to do so, but I'm going to have to keep the new batch on hold for a while yet.

Once I finish KK's commish from the LAST batch (at least I've started it? .___. ) I'm going to focus whatever creative energies I can spare on a project I agreed to work with my brother on. The kid's crazy smart and has been designing (but never finishing) his own games since always, but he's finally buckled down and committed to one of his ideas for a tactical table-top war game.

I've never been one for stuff like Warhammer 40k--I prefer things like D&D and PvE based MMOs in which I can focus more on sissy stuff like developing characters and taking on baddies a few at a time (usually) without worrying about large-scale war tactics or other players kicking my ass just to make my gaming life difficult. But I really like the direction he's taking this project. It's got lots of back story and a fairly intricate system he's somehow managed to make completely comprehensive. He's even got at least one miniatures company and one terrain company on board for sponsorship, and has been in contact with some industry bigwigs for advice and the like.

It'll be difficult to keep it, though, if he doesn't have much to show for his project. He's got over a hundred pages of content so far, I think, but nothing quite says commitment to such a project than content accompanied by polished illustrations and that's where I come in.

He's been hitting the writing hard lately, so even though my truck has finally kicked the bucket and I'll be even more strapped for cash than usual, I should probably refrain from taking on more work and focus on ONE THING for a while. I still have very little free time to draw (as evidenced by my lack of updates), best I try not to divide what I've got even further @_@

lack of internets

Tue Aug 19, 2008, 6:33 AM
So... I've essentially had no internets at home for the past couple weeks :| Not that I have a whole lot of time for them anyway... But I'm still alive! Just... busy! This upcoming weekend ought to be the last one I have to spend helping the fam clear out the old house, then hopefully I can get back to my regularly scheduled drawrink :<
